Licensing Changes

Some important licensing changes will be coming into effect soon as described below.

New DataVeil Licensing Basis

Until now, the licensing basis of the DataVeil data masking software has been primarily on the basis of the number of concurrent users. Some licenses also applied additional masking limits.

A new Team license is being introduced that will be based on connection options and the size of the corresponding production databases being masked.

Discontinuing Professional, Plus-U and Plus-10 licenses

The DataVeil Professional, Plus-U and Plus-10 (“legacy”) licenses will not be available for new license acquisition from August 1, 2023.

Users who already have or will acquire legacy licenses prior to August 1, 2023 shall be “grandfathered” and have the option to renew these indefinitely provided that the legacy license subscription or maintenance is renewed prior to expiry.

Users can choose to upgrade legacy licenses to a Team license at any time on a pro-rated basis.

The New DataVeil Team License

From August 14, 2023, DataVeil licensing shall be streamlined into a single license type known as the Team license. This license shall be on the basis of connection options and the aggregated size of all source production databases to be masked.

The Team license will simplify and expand the scope of usage for many customers. This is because the Team license will allow unlimited concurrent users.

This means that multiple copies of DataVeil can be run in parallel for much faster throughput. It also means that developers can continue with masking project development and maintenance at the same time as other copies are masking data. In contrast, a legacy single user license does not allow for any such concurrent usage.

The Team license shall also combine all three of SQL Server, Azure SQL MI and Azure SQL DB into a single connection option. In legacy licenses Azure SQL DB was licensed separately to SQL Server/Azure SQL MI and therefore such users may realize further cost savings with a Team license.

The annual license fee shall be calculated as follows: $4,250 per connectivity option + sum of all production database sizes to be masked (TB) * $1,250. All prices mentioned are in USD.

The size of a database shall be calculated only on the data portion of a database. It shall not include log files. Only the source database is counted. In other words, if you have a production database with several backup copies and masking is performed on all of these then only the corresponding source production database size is counted.

An example: A customer would like masked copies of several production databases that are all SQL Server and the combined total of these databases is less than 1TB. The annual license fee would be USD 5,500.

Another example: A customer would like masked copies of production databases that have a combined total of 1 TB of SQL Server databases and 2 TB of Oracle databases. Therefore, the annual license fee would be USD 12,250, calculated as 2 * $4,250 (2 connectivity options: SQL Server and Oracle) + 3 * $1,250 (combined total of database sizes in TB).

Online License Verification

From July, 2023 new DataVeil and FileMasker software releases will perform online license verification for legacy DataVeil and FileMasker licenses. If the software is unable to connect to the license server at https://www.dataveil.com, then until November 1, 2023, a warning shall be logged and the software shall continue to operate normally. From November 1, 2023 if the software cannot connect to the license server, the software may terminate.

The DataVeil Team license shall not require online license verification.

The DataVeil Platform License

The DataVeil Platform license is our free community license. This has been renamed to the Community license.

From July, 2023, new DataVeil software releases shall limit Community licenses to masking databases of up to 10 GB. Any number of databases can be masked but no single database can exceed 10 GB.

The existing premium and free mask allowances will continue.

Summary

  • Existing DataVeil Professional, Plus-U and Plus-10 licenses:
    • New legacy license acquisition will not be available from August 14, 2023.
    • Will remain available for renewal indefinitely for licenses acquired prior to August 1, 2023 (grandfathered).
    • Can be upgraded to a DataVeil Team license at any time on a pro-rated basis.
    • Will require online license verification by November 1, 2023.
  • The new DataVeil Team license:
    • Allows unlimited DataVeil instances to be run concurrently.
    • Annual license fee shall be calculated on the basis of connection options selected and the aggregated size of all source production databases.
    • SQL Server, Azure SQL MI and Azure SQL DB shall all be included as a single connection option (legacy licenses required Azure SQL DB to be licensed separately to SQL Server/Azure SQL MI)
    • Will not require online license verification.
  • The DataVeil Platform license:
    • Is renamed to DataVeil Community license.
    • Shall be limited to masking databases of up to 10GB.
    • Will require online license verification by November 1, 2023.
  • FileMasker software:
    • Will require online license verification by November 1, 2023.
