paw-privacy-partner2013The Asia Pacific Privacy Authorities forum members (APPA) are running privacy awareness activities across the Asia Pacific region this year from April 28 through to May 4, 2013.

The Office of the Australian Information Commissioner (OAIC) is celebrating Privacy Awareness Week (PAW) with several events and the release of new privacy guidance and products and DataVeil is proud to be a PAW Partner.

Perhaps the biggest take-away from this event is that privacy law reforms (Australian Privacy Principles) shall take effect as of March 12, 2014.

Businesses should take note there there are some very significant changes that will likely affect the practices of many companies. Among these is accountability for outsourcing such that if an Australian company provides offshore contractors with sensitive data and the contractor does not comply with Australian privacy laws then the Australian company risks liability.

Penalties for non-compliance can be up to $1.7 million for companies and $340,000 for individuals.
